Tips for Organizing Daycare Toys

Are you and your daycare kids buried in toys and clutter by the end of the day? Does your floor space seem to instantaneously disappear when kids arrive? Use these simple tips to help keep your daycare
clutter-free! After all, who wants to add an hour or two to their work day just cleaning up? These tips will create a fun, creative play space that's organized and kid friendly!
Mount a row of hooks to hang children's coats and bags rather than taking up floor space. This should be a very inexpensive item - find one at a garage sale or thrift store! Feel free to paint it for a fun addition to your playroom. If you place a child's picture above each hook, your toddler age daycare kids will be able to recognize their hook and hang their own items!
Utilize baskets and bins! Baskets and bins are great for daycare organization! Use decorative cloth bins to give your room a fun, creative touch. Categorize toys into their own basket or bin - farm animals in one basket, cars and truck in another, and so on. Organized toys keep children engaged. Slide your bins into bookshelves to save floor space and to create a fun look. Label your bins with pictures and words so kids can quickly learn what's in each bin, or use clear bins for an easy glance at what's inside. This will minimize basket dumping and helps with clean-up time. Make it a point to reorganize your bins from time to time.
Recycle! Reuse plastic peanut butter jars to store smaller items - these are great because you can easily see what's inside and the screw-on lid keeps the little ones out! Coffee tubs are great for crayons and markers. For a fun look, have the kids help create decorative labels for these reusable containers, or even make a sculture out of recyclable items.
Shoe organizers aren't just for shoes! Use a shoe organizer as "wall pockets." Hang your shoe organizer at an easy to reach level for the kids and you've created great little pockets for easy access to toys without taking up floor space. Clear pockets are great for an easy look at what's inside. Or for a fun touch, find one made of canvass and let the kids paint a picture or leave a hand print on each pocket.
Create a toy closet. Don't waste closet space by using it to hide clutter! Closets are a great organizational space. This is another excellent place to use your baskets and bins for a great way to store toys. Use shelving for board games, puzzles and books! Give your daycare kids access to the toy closet by making it kid friendly. Place baskets, bins and books on the lower shelves, while placing items that require supervision on top shelves out of reach. Use hanging rods for costumes, and craft aprons!
Rotate books and toys. This is a great practice for saving space and keeping the kids engaged over time without having to constantly buy new items. Store a good supply of toys away and rotate monthly, or when you notice the kids are getting bored with the toys in the playroom, reintroduce the stored books and toys - they'll take interest in these as if they're new!
Keep a bulletin board. Hanging works of art crafted by your daycare kids is a great idea, but don't go overboard as this can create a cluttered effect. Have a bulletin board or designated space to post art work. Change the posted artwork regularly for a fun, creative effect in the playroom. Keep the other walls very simple for a clean, organized look.
A well-organized daycare is a sign of a quality daycare and is attractive to parents. Try these simple, yet effective organizational tips and you'll find your daycare is easier to manage, much easier to clean, and your daycare kids will love it!
