Knowing The Different Options In Tooth Whitening Products

By Amina Fryman

When exposed to certain foods, cigarette, tea or coffee, one's teeth will inevitably become discolored. This is particularly true if they are constantly exposed to these substances. When particles from the aforementioned sources become lodged in the surface enamel of the teeth, the pigments they contain eventually cause this discoloration. Certain formulas have been developed to remove stains of this type, and these are usually called teeth whitening products. However, this term covers a broad range of whitening methods.

Many whitening formulas contain a solution called carbamide peroxide. The latter has been tested and is regarded as safe and effective for use on discolored or stained tooth enamel. In addition, it has an exceptionally stable shelf life. The effectiveness of such formulas is a result of the manner through which they release the peroxide they contain, which subsequently breaks down into a type of free radical agent, which in turn dissolves the particles responsible for the discoloration.

Many whitening kits developed for use at home contain an ingredient called hydrogen peroxide. The primary difference between carbamide and hydrogen is how quickly they achieve the intended results. Bleaching agents such as carbamide peroxide do not typically work as fast as hydrogen peroxide products. This makes the latter ideal for quick treatments. Nevertheless, many experts state that peroxide containing carbamide is a wiser choice, particularly if one prefers overnight treatments.

Conflicting results have been found when the effectiveness of such products were studied. For instance, some studies have indicated that both kinds of peroxide achieve the same results. However, other clinical trials suggest that products containing carbamide offer a more desirable outcome.

Some experts believe that this discrepancy has to do with each product's concentration: they believe it is possible that the potency of the substance has more to do with its effectiveness then the specific ingredients found in the blend. In addition, the administration method may also play an important role in each formula's effectiveness, such as a paste versus a gel.

Such products can be purchased and traditional stores or online. High-potency whiteners are also available. However, one must first schedule an appointment with a dentist or cosmetic professional in order to obtain such a prescription.

It is always wise to seek the advice of a dental professional prior to using any teeth whitening products. The reason for this is likely due to the fact that certain risks are associated with essentially all cosmetic products of this kind. Even though these are typically mild, it is still in one's best interest to talk to a professional prior to making a final choice concerning which formulas are most appropriate.
