Survival Checklist

By Patricia Clark

What does survival mean? Survival simply means the act or process of continuing to live especially in difficult situation and circumstances. Now in order for a person to survive in different circumstances, there are actions to be taken and plans to be made. Survival is not hard but is not easy either especially in places that are known to be dangerous and poses lot of risks in one's life like in the jungle or wilderness or during emergency situations. Now what are the things that a person can do to ensure their survival in different situations? Basically, a person can make a checklist of what needs to be done in order for him/her to be equipped with the proper knowledge and skills needed for survival.

The following is a sample survival checklist that will help you to discern your preparedness level in terms of encountering different situations involving emergency, disasters and calamities:

-Are you always prepared when going on hunting, hiking, fishing, canoeing, mountain-climbing trip or any other outdoor activity by bringing a survival kit that is filled with things that you can use in the event that you or one of your companion will be injured or lost?

-Do you and all your family members know where to go and how to communicate in case that a disaster or calamity happens and you are not altogether in one place?

-For emergency situations, do you and your family have survival food and supplies storage not only in your home but as well as in places that you often stay like in the office, at school and in your vehicle?

-Is your emergency survival food and supplies storage complete with all the things necessary for survival such as food and water, emergency lights, first aid kit, matches, rescue signal like whistle, batteries, cash, clothing, sanitary items, blanket, candle and survival gears and will this last for at least a couple of days?

-Do you have an emergency preparedness plan on where to evacuate in situations that leaving your house and transferring area is necessary?

-Do you check for the weather conditions in your area everyday and if there is a possibility of your location to be hit by natural disasters and calamities?

-Do you frequently check your emergency survival food and supplies storage and replace those that have already expired and are not good to eat?

-Are you assured that your ground is free from potentially harmful objects or debris that might fall off if ever a calamity happens?

*Do you make sure that all your appliances are placed and anchored to your wall securely to avoid falling off when an Earthquake happens?

-Do you have an accessible list of important emergency disaster hotline numbers to dial?

-Do you at least know how to use a compass or know how to follow directions?

-Are you aware of how to use first aid kits in the event that you or your companions get injured?

-Are you capable to use outdoor survival gears that is necessary if in case an animal may attack you or your companion?

Your level of disaster preparedness is measured on the answers you have given on this checklist. If you have answered mostly yes to the questions, it means that you have basic knowledge on how important it is to be prepared to encounter disaster and emergency situations. If you have answered no to more than 50% of the questions, then it is necessary for you to start preparing yourself and your family to increase your chances of survival.
