A Stump Grinding Service Explained

By Michelle Howe

For whatever reasons people often choose to cut down their own trees. Perhaps they are old and disease ridden, or maybe they have grown too large or are too close to the house. One thing that people tend to take into consideration is what are they going to do with the base of the tree that they are left with. Some that have given this some thought beforehand have already contacted a stump grinding service.

If left there, they will have a wasted bit of land, as nothing much apart from fungus will grow there. The root system is still going to be active. So there is a likelihood that either another tree will shoot up where you least want it, or these roots will damage sidewalks or hardstands. There is only one real method for preventing this happening and that is something that the average home owner cannot do for himself.

In years past, or in more rural areas, there were several ways that this problem was approached. All of them could be quite labor intensive, as it entailed digging beneath the root ball. Blasting was a very effective method, although with plenty of windows about, maybe not a viable solution for a residential zone.

Fires were also built beneath them, and the blackened remains were then hauled away. With so many areas being smokeless zones today, this is also probably not viable. So that could also be discounted from the list of possibilities.

The final approach involved wrenching the whole lot from the ground. Ropes or chains would be securely affixed to the tree's base. Then utilising something like a tractor, or even horses the network of roots were cut through as the stump was slowly pulled from the ground.

Any of the above mentioned methods were time consuming. They also tended to leave large problem areas which would need attention afterwards. So although they would get the job done, they are seemed to create just as many problems as they solved.

One thing that a professional company will be able to tell you straightaway is whether that bit of tree needs to remain. It might be holding an embankment in place with its root system. In which case it can be cut quite low to the ground so that it isn't obvious. Sympathetic planting will also help to further mask the problem.

Most people just want the minimum disruption to their normal routines. They feel that the sooner that ugly remaining bit of tree goes the better. The modern way is to grind it down below ground level. The resultant wood chippings can either be taken away and disposed of, or the customer can use them as top dressing on their own flower beds.

Consequently most people now use a stump grinding service. Their machinery does not need you to provide vehicle access, it can even get to hard to reach areas. Experienced companies know what they are doing, they operate safe working practices, and above all else provide the minimum amount of disruption to the customer.
