Every Day Is Reason To Celebrate With Weird National Holidays

By Angel Dudley

Whether it's the 4th of July or Christmas, everyone loves a holiday. The official ones mean that you can get a day off work but in the USA, there are unofficial holidays for almost every day of the year and celebrating almost anything under the sun. Some try to help make the world a better place, some remind you to appreciate those around you and some are just downright strange. You may want to keep a calendar of weird national holidays on your desk so you can feel as if every day is a holiday.

Among the more serious holidays are ones focusing on good causes. In July, for instance, you may celebrate not only Nelson Mandela's birthday but also the 67 years of his life that he dedicated to making the world a better place, by giving 67 minutes of your time for the benefit of others. There is a special day simply for hugging people and one for waving your fingers at your neighbors to spread some cheer. Those less fortunate, like homeless animals or people who married someone with Scorpio as their star sign, are on the agenda too.

You'll find many a holiday to appreciate a certain group of people, from your local pharmacist to disc jockeys and even the weatherman. Some of these days are there to celebrate some very, very important figures, like dragons or the tooth fairy. There's even a Name Your PC Day for that inanimate object that often seems to have a mind of its own.

Many national holidays have an educational slant. World Book Day, Stop Bullying Day and Kid Inventors' Day are just some that may encourage children to learn. You're never too old to learn something new yourself and Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day may be a great time to start. Also remember that April 23, the day on which The Bard was born as well as the day on which he died, is Talk Like Shakespeare Day.

If you love eating, you can use a holiday calendar to plan the year's menu. There's a day for beans, for pie, for peanut brittle, for pancakes, for red apples and for pretty much anything else that you can eat. National Buffet Day is for when you can't decide what you'd like to nibble on and on December 16 you have the opportunity to make anything taste better by covering it in chocolate.

Music is another cause for celebration. From musical instruments like the saxophone and the violin to gadgets like the CD player have their special appreciation days. You can even sing along to your favorite earworms on National One-hit Wonder Day.

Games enthusiasts have much to rejoice about too. From trivia to puzzles, there is a day to appreciate your favorite game. If you're more into seemingly bizarre sports, you'll also love Curling is Cool Day.

There are many more weird national holidays, including Talk Like A Pirate Day. You'll find calendars and more information about these online. It's good to circle International Moment of Frustration Scream Day on your calendar but don't forget that there is also an International Day of Awesomeness.
