Benefits And Shortcomings Of Non GMO

By Megan Landry

The abbreviation GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Like their name suggests, non GMO are those produce that are naturally produced and are organic. With genetic modification, one or more genes are removed from DNA of organisms like viruses and bacteria. Genes that are so removed get recombined into the organisms where alteration is desired.

Genetic engineers aim to achieve improvement in production by making the altered organisms exhibit qualities similar to those of organisms where the genes are removed. When their production started, there was debate as to whether GMOs are safe, which is why most countries did not even allow their sale. Over time however, there has been increasing acceptance, though most people still opt for organic produce.

The major reason why people do not use the organic foods is the costs involved. They cost much more than GMO foods. The main reason why organic produce costs more is because there are a lot of expenses involved in their production. That aside, most of these foods are rarely treated with preservatives and are thus not expected to last longer after purchase.

There are several benefits that are associated with organic foods. Perhaps more importantly is the fact that they do not have as many chemicals. The practices of farming used are natural and thus, safe. With non natural methods, there is the use of sewage sludge and several other pesticides. Hormones are also used for stimulation of production of more milk and eggs.

Pesticides used are likely to leave residues on the products from such animals, something that may have a long term effect on consumers. Further, there may be leakage of hormones and antibiotics into produce, posing more risks. Farmers that use organic methods do not use chemical means for production, thus there is unlikely to be as much residue.

It is for a fact that the environment is very important, which is why most countries, organizations and individuals have launched campaigns to protect it against any destruction. Use of GMO leads to damage of the environment. With organic production, this is not the case because there is no use of chemicals, at least not extensively.

There are a number of disadvantages of organic farming as well. First and foremost, there is a challenge of maintaining organic kitchens. This is informed by the fact that the costs of these foods is high, plus there has been increased acceptance of non organic foods, which makes the used by many. Using purely organic foods is tedious, and at times inconveniencing.

Due to health concerns and effects on the environment of products that are not naturally produced, most companies are investing in production of non GMO products. The process of certification however is costly and complicated. Small business persons cannot easily get such certifications. In the wake of the need to label such foods, such small businesses lose out.

The other debate that has raged for some time is whether or not non GMO are more nutritious. Contrary to popular belief that they are more nutritious, this is yet to be fully proven. As a matter of fact, it is even thought that the two groups of foods are equally nutritious.
