By Nicole Smith

Lip balm is one of the most widely used beauty product nowadays. Lip balms not only give relief to our chapped and dry lips; they also give protection from external factors that can cause your lips to dry. Most lip balms also provide light color to the lips and seals in moisture to your lips.

There are two kinds of lip balm according to the manner it was prepared, the commercially prepared lip balms and the homemade lip balms. The good thing about commercially prepared lip balms is that there are a wide variety of this kind of lip balms available in most groceries and stores. On the other hand, homemade lip balms are easy to make and a wide variety of recipes can be followed and you can always choose you preferred scent, consistency, color and texture when making your own homemade lip balm.

Here is a sample lip balm recipe that makes use of your old lipstick.

Materials to prepare:

Small container (to be used in storing your lip balm)

Petroleum jelly

Old lipstick

Your choice of food flavoring

What to do:

1. Take a small amount of petroleum jelly, using a spoon or any other material, then place in a container that is microwaveable(the amount depends on the amount of lp balm you want to make).

2. Place the microwaveable container with petroleum jelly in the microwave and wait until the petroleum jelly turns liquid.

3. Making sure that your petroleum jelly is ready and is in a liquid state already, it is time to add your old lipstick. Remember that the amount of lipstick you will put is dependent on how dark you want your lip balm to be.

4. After adding the lipstick into the fluid petroleum jelly, you can put back the petroleum jelly and lipstick mixture in the microwave for a minute or until the lipstick completely melts. When the lipstick has melted, take the mixture from the microwave and continuously stir until the lipstick completely mixes or combines with the petroleum jelly.

5. Putting in drops of your preferred food coloring is optional, but if you want to do so, make sure to mix it into the concoction very well. Also, if you wish to add food coloring into your lip balm mixture, there are a lot of food coloring that you can choose from such as lemon, orange, strawberry, mint, vanilla and chocolate. However if you don't like to add food coloring into your lip balm concotion, you can just disregard this step and go on into the next step.

6. If you notices that the mixture has started to harden, you can place it back into the microwave to reheat it and pour it into the container once it is liquid again. Remember to ualways use an oven glove when trying to hold the container especially if it comes right out of the oven since it is hot.

7. Tightly close the container. It is your choice if you want to place your mixture into the refrigerator for it to harden faster and within 20 minutes your mixture is already hard or you can just leave it to harden at room temperature which may take about an hour before it hardens.

8. Once your prepared lip balm has completely hardened, you can now try to use your homemade colored lip balm.

Aside from getting your own lip balm that is easy to make, you will also experience the fun in making your own homemade lip balm with the use of your old lipstick. If you feel that your homemade lip balm is good to use and you feel happy with result of making your own homemade lip balm, you have the freedom to again make other sets of homemade lip balm that you can use and also give away as gifts to other people.
