How to Effectively Lead Your Employees According to Vantage Point Consulting

By Amy Carter

What makes a leader? This is a complicated question that few can answer off hand but fortunately a manager of Vantage Point Consulting had plenty to say on this subject and suggested I take a few notes. According to this company, leadership entails having a vision, mentoring, being enthusiastic, proper delegation, giving back, celebrating victories, giving credit, and teamwork.

Having a vision is crucial. If your people don't know where they are going, any old road will take them there. As a leader, you are in the front of your business. You are the captain of the shipthe navigatorand you set the course. Having a vision and knowing where you are going is only half of the work. The other half is communicating that vision to your people.

Becoming a Mentor: Having knowledge is ideal but sharing it with others is what helps improve others lives and livelihood. Offering to spend time with those you feel have the right stuff to make the grade and show their stuff. You representing the same respect and tutelage that was offered to you in your humble beginnings and present new ideas on how to augment your protg's status, sharpen their goals and over all better themselves.

Enthusiasm in the workplace: Arriving early and digging into that workload shows conviction. Fan that flame and let it spread like wildfire. Vantage Point Consulting management teaches us that lighting the fire under those that need a bit of a push is really all it takes to get your projects done on time and ahead of schedule so don't hold back your ferocity for the work.

Delegate tasks: Delegating the work that someone else besides you can do will free you up to conduct higher level activities. Training someone to do something that matches up with their strengths will ultimately give you more time on your hands to drive performance.

Get involved in charity work. Setting the right example for your people can be the difference between growing your company and just maintaining the current standards. Volunteerism not only sets a selfless example, but helps your employees and future managers be less self-centered in their decision-making processes themselves.

Work and Play: Vantage Point Consulting teaches us if nothing else how to appreciate the people that work under you by celebrating the victories. Whether it is a cookout, a night out on the town or a paintball excursion, this is a team building exercise that everyone can enjoy and shows you do not forget to reward good work.

Don't brag about yourself, brag about your team. Giving credit to those who have done a great job can push others to try their best in the future. Although some people may be jealous, people want recognition. So that envy will turn into striving for better results if you execute your props correctly.

Cooperation is essential: Most small businesses lack resources so teamwork is necessary. Insisting on making your own claim or crowding out others only hampers the teamwork structure. Nothing wrong with having different opinions and ideas but introduce them in the right format. Host a demonstration or power point meeting instead. Pitch ideas and ask for feedback.

My interview with management at Vantage Point Consulting led to knowing that the company's goals are to make management candidates into strong leaders. Providing the tools and skills to success in the business field and making a difference in every position leaves no one without guidance or left behind. Management is different than leadership. Leaders create other leaders while managers keep systems and processes in place. Knowing the difference will ultimately help your business grow.
