Girl Up clubs are groups of young American women who help spread awareness about the difficult issues
facing young women in developing third world nations. It is a part of the United Nations Foundation. It teaches leadership skills so that the club members can make a difference in combating poverty in these remote regions of the world. The clubs raise funds and conduct outreach programs to bring more awareness about these issues.
The ultimate goal is enable young women to have fulfilled productive lives despite the conditions where they live. Providing educational and health care resources is a major part of achieving this goal. Social scientists have concluded that the entire society benefits when girls are well educated and have access to good health care. The participants of the clubs also benefit by developing powerful leadership skills that they will have throughout their whole life.
Approximately 600 million young females live in developing countries. Sadly many of these juvenile women can not obtain their true potential. They are not fully included in their communities. It is difficult for them to receive decent health care. They are discouraged from going to school so they can receive a good education. They are forced to marry and to have children while they are still very young. They face the risks from having to bear children at such an early age.
The American girls who join the clubs contribute a lot to help cure these problems. It starts the conversation among the young women about helping solve these world wide issues. They become a powerful force to start changing things so girls in developing countries can become productive members of their society.
It has been shown that girls who marry at a later age have fewer children. They are able to get better health care. They raise healthier more stable families. Educated women get better jobs and contribute to society. The entire society benefits. Economies will grow and this promotes political stability for the world.
It is not just the girls living in developing regions who benefit. The club member receive a lot too. They learn valuable organizational and leadership skills. These skills look great on a college application or job resume. These are skills that they will benefit them throughout their lifetime.
About one hundred forty million children in the world are not attending school and more than one half of these kids are girls. A huge component in eliminating poverty is making sure these young ladies receive a decent education. The wonderful result is the standard of living for everybody in their country will dramatically improve.
